Janine-WassonThe first time I ran more than two miles without stopping, I…
realized I needed running shoes. I got into running by accident in 2004. Instead of going for a walk I decide to see how long I could run. I ended up running (or in my case jogging) 4 miles.

If I didn’t run, I would…
be really overweight and cranky. I love the change in scenery when I run giving myself visual goals, especially when I feel like stopping.

Favorite Shoe:
Mizuno Wave Rider. i had to change becuase Asics changed my old favorite.

What is your motivation?
My family. I introduced them to running when my husband and I started dating. Now all 3 of us (we have a 17 yr. old) run and enjoy races. The only problem is they are much faster than me. You’d think they let the old lady beat them once in a while.

Hot or cold weather runner?
Hot weather. My nose runs too much in the cold.

How often do you race?
I try to do 2-3 half marathons a year and then support the local races. My goal with each race is to try and improve my time from the year before.

Favorite gel flavor?
Hammer gel apple/cinnamon

Ever run a marathon?
Yep. Last November I ran the Rock-n-Roll marathon is San Antonio. Boy did I learn a lot.

Care to run another (or a first one)?
Absolutely – I KNOW I can beat my time and set a better PR. I’m going to run my second marathon this October in Des Moines.

If I could run with anyone, it would be?
It depends. Assuming the person would run my pace, I would love to run with Kara Goucher or Joan Samuelson. Though they might be able to walk and still keep up with me.

Rather run alone, or with a partner?
It’s a combination. I’m a very social runner who likes to encourage others during races. I like running around others because it helps keep me motivated. However I feel that the drive to run must come from within. My husband and! I usual ly start our runs together, but since he’s faster I end up running alone.

Race you’d like to forget?
Not really. I have finished every race I have entered and nothing bad has happened to me (knock on wood). I’ve had moments in races I’d like to forget like when the person pushing the double stroller passes me running up a hill. UGH!

Favorite local race?
In Cedar Rapids, it has to be the Fifth Season race. Go Mike Regan! Rounding out my top 3 are Bix for the crowd and Des Moines half-marathon for the great organized and supportive race.

Ever win your age group?
Nope, but I did place 2nd in my age group last year at the Solon Spartan Fund Run 10K. The best part was on run out the returning runners were passing me and I only counted a few women so I thought my chances and placing were good. Then at the turn around I find out that I am the very last runner. This goes to show you you can end up last and still metal!

Listen to music when running?
Absolutely. I listen to rock, AC/DC, Kid Rock, Van Halen, Guns & Roses. All the classics.

Ever run in a costume?
Not yet. My husband and I are doing a Muddy Buddy in Minneapolis this fall. I wanted a race in which we could be a team and have fun. We are still trying to figure out if what type of costumes to wear. He wants to dress up as pigs with wings and call ourselves “Swine Flu”

Best part of running?
The best part of running in a race is all the great people you meet. The best part of running for me personally is proving the many people who didn’t think I was a runner that I am.

What I do to support my running habit (occupation)?
I’m a Program Manager at Pearson in Iowa City. I oversee the state assessments for K-12 grade students in Puerto Rico.
