The 2nd annual Ugly “Sweat”er Social and Fun Run was a success!!

It was a gorgeous day to run and socialize with temperatures nearing 50 degrees. Runners gathered behind Big Grove Brewery to start the festivities.

At 1 PM sweater clad runners were given information about the route, the new scavenger hunt and Shelter House. The Iowa River Corridor Trail was the backdrop, stretching to the Trueblood recreation area and back, for a 5 ish mile route. For an additional bonus, runners could run to the Shelter House low barrier winter shelter. On the route there would be items not found in nature, they would need to be brought back to the brewery and redeemed for a prize.

Heartland Soles checked the list to make sure all items were returned. Runners carrying toilet paper and giant presents were a site to see.

Once back, then it was time to devour cookies and vote for the best. While there was an assortment of treats a fancy cardamom cookie took home the top prize.

The ugly sweater contest followed, and creativity won! There were many choices including a onesie, presents and ugly sweater shoes.  However, the homemade mistletoe sweater was the favorite.

While having all the fun, Shelter House was collecting donations. There was a box for monetary donations and bins for things like long underwear and clean pillows. A $25 donation will sponsor 1 night of shelter; a bed to sleep in and food to eat for a single person. If you would like to donate, please check out https://shelterhouseiowa.org/donate/.

It was sad to see the event come to an end, but the best part of the day was learning that the running community had donated $664 to Shelter House. (This amount includes the Giving Tuesday campaign.) This amount was matched by Corridor Running, for a total donation of $1,328.00.

THANK YOU! Thank you runners! Thank you Heartland Soles! Thank you Shelter House.

We look forward to this event, and can’t wait for December 2019.
